(November 2013)

Fall 2013 - The big season for movies is coming up. Are you ready for Tom Hanks as Walt Disney? The old fart who founded this website was, in his younger days, a big fan of Uncle Walt Disney. One of the movies that are opening this fall season is Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney during the time in the early 1960s when he was wooing P.L. Travers (the talented Emma Thompson) to acquire the rights to her Mary Poppins series of books. Let us say here and now we can’t think of a better actor, a better person to play Walt Disney than Tom Hanks. This movie was directed by John Lee Hancock who also directed the award-winning movie The Blind Side in 2009.

Tom Hanks and Emma ThompsonAnother movie we’re looking forward to is Gravity starring Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and Ed Harris. Directed by Alfonso Cuaŕon who directed the terrific Children of Men (2006). This appears to be a visually stunning picture about problems on the space station

If we’re getting Tom Hanks as Walt Disney; how about Tom Hanks as the captain of a freighter hijacked by Somali pirates? That’s the scene in the upcoming Captain Phillips; a true story of the 2009 hijacking of a US flagged cargo ship, the first in 200 years. Directed by Paul Greengrass who directed the well-received 9/11 movie Flight 93 in 2006.

This movie sounds like a lot of fun; Her starring Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. This science fiction story, “set in the near future”, is of a man who falls in love with his newly purchased operating system with the seductive voice of Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Spike Jonze who also directed 2009’s Where the Wild Things Are.

The Coen Brothers are a favorite of ours here at The Toast; Joel directs and Ethan writes the screenplay or Joel writes and Ethan directs; whatever. Inside Llewyn Davis is their latest movie starring Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan about the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s. No Country for Old Men (2007) and Fargo (1996) as well as Blood Simple (1984) and Raising Arizona (1987) are all, but not exclusive, favorite Coen Brother movies of The Toastmaster.

  Ender's Game

This fall we're also getting a couple of movie bios: Diana, starring Naomi Watts as the Princess Diana and The Fifth Estate starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, that bad boy of the internet.

Top-tier directors releasing big pictures this fall include: Ron Howard with Rush, a semi-true story of Formula One racers; American Hustle directed David O. Russell who directed last year’s award-winning Silver Linings Playbook - this movie is about the FBI’s Abscam operation of the late 1970s; Martin Scorsese is out with The Wolf of Wall Street, big business-Wall Street corruption and mob infiltration, all juicy subjects for Scorsese’s camera. World War 2 is the subject of The Monuments Men, a special Army unit tasked with locating and saving art work and other culturally significant items looted by the Nazis. The movie is directed by and stars George Clooney.

In the area of real outer-space science fiction this fall will see the release of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. In the future the youth of the world will be the saviors of our planet Earth from an invasion of an alien race. Should be exciting.
